Book Report on Pride and Prejudice
Pride and Prejudice was wrote by the famous English writer Jane Austen, who lived from 1775 to 1817. Her six novels are Northanger abbey, Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Persuasion. Her novels are highly prized not only for their light irony, humor, and depiction of contemporary English country life, but also for their underlying serious qualities. And the books that I read has 395 pages, it is first published in first published in 2004.
The main subject in the novel is stated in the first sentence of the novel: “It’s truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” This statement clearly shows that the main subject will be courtship and marriage and it leads a classic story on love and value in the early of nineteenth century rural England.
Pride and Prejudice describles a society in which a woman’s reputation is of the utmost importance. A woman is expected to behave in certain ways. Stepping outside the social norms makes her vulnerable to ostracism and cannot be accepted by society. To be specific, the novel tells the story of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet and their five young daughters waiting for marriage in a township middle-class family and presents seven different marriages all together. These marriages wave with each other to reveal the author’s opinions and thoughts on the subject of the marriage.
The plot revolves mainly around the second daughter Elizabeth and her troublesome romance story with the wealthy but arrogant Mr. Darcy. The marriage between them reveals the basic elements that constitute a successful marriage. One is that the reliable affection couldn’t be produced only by appearances and must gradually develop through series of events.
