Gasoline was used 100 years ago, and is still used today. The world becomes worse and worse as time passes, yet we still use gasoline. So you might ask why we use hydrocarbons instead of Hydrogen. There are multiple answers to that question. First, everybody is used to it, mechanics, consumers, car companies, oil companies, national politics, etc. It would be a huge change if we suddenly stopped using hydrocarbons. Secondly, Hydrogen pumps are not easy to come by. Also, gas is cheaper than hydrogen. Lastly, gas is more efficient. For a long time, everybody in the world has been using gasoline. It is what we are used to. Everyone is used to using hydrocarbons for everything. It is just socially acceptable. If we did run into the problem where we were forced to switch from gas, it would be a huge problem. Many people would throw a fit and panic because they wouldn’t know what to do. Another reason of why we still use hydrocarbons is because of availability. There may be more hydrogen stations in some places than others. So in those places that don’t have a nearby station, they would not switch. They would not want to travel many miles just to refill their tanks. So maybe if there was a higher quantity of hydrogen stations, it would increase the number of people that would be interested in switching from hydrocarbons to hydrogen. The final reason of why we still use hydrocarbons is because of efficiency. Gas is just overall better. It runs better, smother, and faster. Gas is just easier and with the world being as it is, they chose the easy way out.
