There are many important themes in the film, “Bajo la misma luna.” One of the most important themes in this film is change. The film shows that some people can change to become better people and then others cannot. In the film, Carlitos find his father in the United States. His father promises to take him to his mother in Los Angeles. Carlitos waits for his father to pick him up, but he never shows up. Carlitos’ father did not change throughout the film. He abandoned Carlitos more than once. Enrique however did change throughout the film. In the beginning of the film, he didn’t want anything to do with Carlitos and preferred to travel in the United States by himself. As the film progressed, Enrique began to sympathize for Carlitos and vowed to help him find his mother. Enrique sacrifices his own freedom to help Carlitos escape from the police and reach the safety of his mother after his long trip to the United States. Enrique is imprisoned and most likely will be deported back to Mexico. He was aware of the circumstances and possible outcome before he helped Carlitos escape. His actions showed his devotion and love for the young boy. Carlitos also changed in the movie. In the beginning of his trip to the United States he thought that his mother didn’t care about him anymore because she was gone for four years. When he realized that his mother had spent four year in the United States trying to make a better life for him he saw that she did love him. It was his hope that allowed him to reach this realization. He has been separated from his mother for four years ever since he was five years old. He hopes to once again live with his mother in the United States. In the film, change in people’s character show how much they care about others and how far they are willing to go to protect those people.
