Executive summary
Computers operate under a grand software system termed the Operating System. This system takes the intermediary stage between the hardware and the software. The software in this case is bunch of applications with offering various utilities, installed on a computer. Microsoft Windows is the basic operating system used the world and over in large numbers (in many computers). Windows has undergone various transformations in terms of versions, which, in fact, is a periodic improvement from the previous. The computer world (PC World) is predominantly occupied by the Microsoft Windows operating system, making it the leading PC operating system in use today in the world. Apple Macintosh comes in at a far second and succeeded by the different flavors of Linux system, including Mint and Ubuntu (Muchmore 2013). Different factors exist that position Windows OS at the helm of PC rivalry which may be outside the scope of this discussion. Consumers of Personal Computers (PC) are the driving force behind the ubiquity of Microsoft Windows tandem to the acute business strategy of the company. By paying a keen attention to software and hardware consumer demands, trends taken by developers, the internet and security concerns Microsoft Windows has evolved from the initial text based system (Command Line Interface) to the Graphical User Interface system, which has been enhanced under Windows RT, and Windows 8 to the shock of many consumers. Previous Windows succeeding Windows ME up to Windows 7 have used a standardized graphical user interface with a slight change in the Windows 7 that employed a transparent rim window codenamed Aero. Windows 8 on the other hand has drastically changed from the common start menus exposed by pressing the start button to the “Metro” style interface, which is much more reflective of touch screen systems.
