(Book Report)


The book Last Train – A Holocaust Story, written and narrated by Rona Arato is about the struggle of many Jews from a massive devastation brought by the Nazis. This sorrowful event started at Karcag, Hungary on April 1944 and ended at Farsleben, Germany on April 1945.

Paul, a curious and stubborn 5 year old boy who sometimes gets into trouble, survived the said holocaust. “Paul was pretty smart, but liked to do things on his own way.” He looked more like his mother, Lenke. One of his most important event that ever happened to him was when he finally met his father after being separated during the war. “I couldn't remember what you look like but then when I saw you, I recognized you.” Paul said to his father. Although, the experience terror gave him difficulty in living life, he managed to move forward and decided to start a new chapter of his life. I felt sorry for Paul for being involved in the tragedy that they had experienced and at the same time, I’m proud of how he showed braveness.

Oscar, the eldest brother of Paul, who too charged and care of their family during the holocaust. He looked more like his father. “With his blue eyes and fair skin, Oscar resembled their father.” At his young age, he was already given a responsibility to take care of his family especially, his brother, Paul. “When their father left, he put Oscar incharge of keeping Paul safe.” He became silent, like Paul, about what happened to the holocaust and at the same time, he was puzzled when he’d assumed that the people who survived recovered immediately from the war. Oscar is a brave boy who had enough courage to take charge and take good care of his family.

Lenke was a loving and caring mother of Paul and Oscar. During the war, she had a drastic change physically. “Her usually rosy cheeks were drained of color. Her hair, usually pulles back into a sleek bun, had come loose. Black...
