ASSIGNMENT 1: CRITICAL SUMMARY

Nils Christie’s article “Conflicts as Property” discusses the lack of internal conflict felt by highly industrialized societies and by what means legal cases have become the property of lawyers rather than the involved parties. He argues that the court procedures have taken away the rights of victims to participate and lawyers have become too involved in the outcomes of court proceedings. Furthermore, Christie proposes the organization of social systems to both nurture conflict and solve it, and to see that professionals do not monopolize from the outcomes of court proceedings ( Christie, vol.17 Conflicts As Property, 1997 pg 1).

I agree with Christie’s ideas about Conflicts because I think they are considered as important elements in the society. I, like Christie, think that the social systems should be altered to make conflicts visible and professionals should ensure not to monopolize the handling of conflicts. I think this would help the parties involved in a case to fully participate thereby not losing the case. To support the above proposition of the victim’s being fully denied of their participation in a case (property), Christie first introduces where the criminology has gone wrong in the legal society ( Christie, vol.17, conflicts as property, 1997).
