The song I chose, Same Love, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlVBg7_08n0, was written by Mackelmore and Ryan Lewis. Mackelmore is a rapper whose real name is Ben Haggerty. (Internet 2) He was born on June 19, 1983 in Seattle, Washington. (Internet 2) At an early age, Mackelmore was encouraged by his mother to be supportive of difference as she was. When he attended high school, he began abusing drugs and using alcohol. His parents moved him to another school in hopes of ending his bad habits. In 2008, he entered into a 35-day rehab program at his father’s request. He became sober and met DJ and producer Ryan Lewis.
Ryan Lewis was born on March 25, 1988 in Spokane Washington. (Internet 3) His interest in music came at an early age. He began playing the guitar and eventually took up photography. In 2006, he befriended hip-hop artist, Mackelmore via Myspace. After Mackelmore fully recovered from major substance-abuse issues, the two decided to team up and work together musically.
“Same Love” is a song that was written in support of legalizing same-sex marriage particularly in reference to Washington Referendum 74 which is a Washington State referendum to approve or reject the February 2012 bill that would legalize same-sex marriage. (Internet 4) The lyrics clearly talks about the hate people have for gays which are shown by the words that are used to depict gays.
