According to the Webster Dictionary, the world CULTURE means “the customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group”. Every society in the world has its own culture that follows its own set of rules and has its own set of standards or beliefs. Within those standards or beliefs come a set of rules or norms that each culture follows that sets up a structure within that culture. The structure that these cultures follow by at times makes it hard to communicate with foreigners who do not understand how these rules work. These norms are what make a culture unique to other cultures.
A norm “is a standard that is required or regarded as normal” (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/norm). There are basic norms such as social etiquette, family solidarity, hospitality, and honor that are practiced by all cultures. What makes the Middle Eastern culture different from other cultures is that they practice other norms that some cultures do not. Values, on the other hand is “worth in usefulness or importance to the possessor; utility or merit” (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/). Unlike norms, values are based upon what the individual believes and still falls under the set of norms that the culture has set in place. Of course with time changing and things such as the internet, the way the cultures are practiced are somewhat changed from generation to generation. Although some cultures or societies may change faster than others, there is still that hint of structure among cultures.
In the Middle East, the Internet is starting to impact these countries in a big way. This new technology has an opportunity to impact this culture in a big way. The religious norm that the Middle Eastern culture has in place forbids the women to take advantage of this technology. These are strict and extremely obligatory.
