Growing up I was always one of the smartest people in my class and it seemed as though everyone looked up to me for that. But with me being the naïve person I once was, I failed to see that people only looked to me for answers, rather than for the role model figure I deeply thought I was. I was good in math, science, reading and writing, and even sometimes in gym I could play certain sports, but this was still not enough. It seemed as though people could not get pass the fact that I had big teeth and everyone made fun of me because of them. I was an easy target because my teeth prevented me from closing my mouth and even though I was smart and could play sports, somewhat, people simply could not stop saying that I had “BEAVER TEETH”.
It was before football practice and my step brothers and I showed up early. It was sort of a tradition to play before practice to have a little fun because when it started you had to be serious. A few of us decided we wanted to play a game called pick em up mess em up (a game where you have a group of people trying to tackle the one person with the ball to prevent them from scoring a touchdown) and I played because I did not want to be left out and made fun of at the time. The game started and everything was going swimmingly. Everyone was enjoying themselves and more and more people started to join in on the fun. Practice was about to start in thirty minutes and I began to brace myself, so I figured one more play would not do me any harm. Boy was I wrong.
Throughout the entire game I had no helmet on. We had been playing pick em up mess em up for a while and people had been getting tackled all day. Right before the last play of the day for me I decided I was going to take down a kid who had been running the ball crazy like a rogue elephant. I thought to myself, “Kevin, you gotta knock this kid down because he cannot keep running like this. There is no way he should be able to keep scoring and I do not appreciate him doing that....
