Today in the United States there are approximately 15 million people in which suffer from depression each year, out of that two thirds will neither get help nor be treated. This disorder can also lead to suicide, which is the second leading cause of death in teenagers 15-19 and the third in younger children(Depression Guide). Depression is a serious pervasive mood disorder, this disability causes feelings of extreme sadness, helplessness, hopelessness, and worthlessness. Depression can be mild to moderate with symptoms of apathy, little appetite, lack of sleep, low self esteem, and low grade fatigue(Depression Guide). Depression is a very severe disorder that needs to be taken more seriously by those in society. This can be achieved through studies on the causes, effects, treatment, and through examination of case studies.



Effects

Depression affects three main parts of the way a person lives and views life, depression affects a persons thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. People with depression can go through feelings of not wanting to spend time with family, not want to shower, most often a person will move slower than usual(Zucker). Depression is a very serious disorder that needs to be taken seriously by people in society, by learning about the different affects on a persons thoughts, feelings, and behaviours this will better educate society on depression(zucker).



Thoughts

Those who are close with someone who suffers from depression may notice changes in the persons thinking and talking about themselves. These thoughts could seem jumbled; a person suffering with depression might have a hard time being able to concentrate on simple things of for long amounts of time, they might also have a difficult time making decisions, or fail tests that used to come easy to them(Zucker).
