Dr.Faustus is depicted as a very bright and accomplished man, until he is made human again by the allure of fame, riches and women that ultimately lead to his dramatic demise.
In the beginning of the play Faustus callers Two closest friends to come meet him in his home to talk to them about conjouring a deamon. Through Faustus's ignorance he thinks that he had found a perfect way to get whatever he wants that will hopefully keep him happy and satisfied for the rest of his earthly life.
It is only after conjouring Mephistopheles does he discover that his wonderful revelation might not be so great, mainly because he must give his soul to the devil in order for Mephistopheles to serve him.
This is leads to Dr. Faustus great downfall. Depression and despair really hit him hard because he dosent want to go to hell, although he never turns back to God either. He really struggles with his own conscience both before and after signing the blood contract with Mephistopheles because he knew that there was very little chance that God would ever forgive him for his terrible disregard for his soul. What that ever so smart Dr. Faustus dosent realize is that he could still have.
However throughout the duration of the play he still fights with his conscience, which makes it very hard for him to live with the choice that he made for himself and is scene V Faustus says.
“What boots it then to think of God or Heaven? Away with such vain fancies and despair;”
This statement shows the reader that Faustus has given up on himself and has lost all confidence in the Grace of God and this really is where Faustus basically thinks that since he cant change his past he might as well have fun while he still can.
