Throughout history many old and new diseases are being discovered, that affects our human race on a larger scale, one of those diseases is Ebola. After researching many diseases I came across the Ebola Virus. The virus is named after Ebola river valley in the Africa Nation state of the Democratic Republic. The Ebola virus is one of 18 known viruses capable of causing the viral hemorrhagic fever syndrome. Ebola is the common term used to describe a group of viruses together belonging to genus, the Ebola virus belonging to family Filoviridae. The family is known for the common disease they cause, Ebola hemorrhagic fever. The Ebola virus is comprised of four distinct subtypes: Zarie, Suden Cote d’ivoire and Reston. This essay will discuss how Ebola came into existence while analyzing the definition of chronic disease, and Epidemiology and Clinical aspects of this disease and how the disease can be controlled and prevented.
The first outbreak came out on august 26, 1976 in Yambuku a town in the north of Zaire. The first person to have this disease was 44 year school teacher. He was coming home from Zaire. When the doctors diagnosed his high fever, they first thought it was malaria. Another outbreak happened in cotton factory on Nzara, Suden. It was suspected to be carried by bats as other animals were tested and none of them were accepted except bats. Monkeys are also known to be carrying this disease. The mortality rates are very high, ranging from 50%-90%.
The average time from onset of early symptoms to death varies in the range of 3-21 days, with mean of 10.1. Ebola diagnoses its victims in very little time leading to their death; however it is hard to spread the disease. The only people that can be easily infected are friends and family members. Some doctors and nurses are also infected because they lack the knowledge of protecting themselves.
