Environment and Technology: Impact of Technology on Agriculture
Over the years, technological advancements have had a great impact on various sectors of the economy, such as communication, transportation, health, and agriculture. With an increasing number of technological innovations being experienced worldwide, a majority of tasks have become easy to handle such that more time can now be saved. In this regard, agriculture is among the sectors that are currently relying on technology to perform their roles in the society. In the United States, agricultural technology has supplemented the economy and enhanced people’s well-being because it has improved methods of cultivation as well as crop and animal husbandry. Hence, this paper evaluates the impact of technology on agriculture. Arguably, improvements in agricultural technology have played a pivotal role in simplifying the work of farmers and boosting crop and animal production.
Ostensibly, in the contemporary era, it has become easier for farmers to cultivate crops even in arid and semi-arid areas. For instance, modern technology has led to the creation of genetically engineered plants that can survive harsh weather conditions and certain pest infestations. Such plants yield healthy produce and grow fast; hence, they are beneficial to the farmer. Moreover, since genetically engineered plants are highly resistant to pests, farmers can reduce costs of using pesticides.
In addition, due to the discovery of new organic fertilizers, nutrient supplements, and new crop varieties, global agricultural output has increased, and agriculture has become the backbone of most countries' economies (Berry 124). Correspondingly, more people are opting to take courses related to agriculture in higher learning institutions. Technology has also facilitated the development of new agricultural industries to accommodate the increasing rates of production.
