The story begins in Philidelphia, were the main character Cassie is living with her mom Maria and little sister Edna. One day when Cassie was at the park she unexpectedly met Mrs.Thompson. An old lady that had no family exept a ruthless son that hated her. Mrs.Thompson offered to pay Cassie if she was to be her companion. They became wonderful freinds. One day Cassie was in the feild when she say a horse. She screamed and the horse came running at her. The horse ran right by her when she fainted. Her father was killed by a horse when she was fifteen. She has been terrified by then ever since. Then she was helped up by Mark Langford,the owner of the horse. She fell in love with him right away,and he fell in love with her.But they were great freinds. Mark came from Boston on a mission. His best friend was murdered there and he wanted to find the man who killed him. So he told Cassie about how Mr.Thompson( Mrs.Thompsons' son) seemed susspisious, they try to find out more information about him. They pre-tended they were dateing so he could come over to Cassies house more often to watch over Mr.Thompson.But Mr.Thompson was a dangerous man.He found out they were on to him so he theatend Cassie and his mother.He found out Mrs.Thompson took him out of her will,so he threatend to burn the house down.Mrs.Thompson's health suddenly was bad and she almost died because her son was poisoning her.But she still did not put him in her will.
