Functions of Management

Even though managing to a single strength is a natural instinct for any manager, organizations must provide adequate attention and resources to all four principle functions of management to realize full potential. Good managers do not neglect any of the four management functions as planning, organizing, leading and controlling at every level of management are each equally important to the success of any business. Lack of focus in any category can cause an organization to underachieve and not meet corporate objectives.

As a sales representative for a large multinational telecommunications company, I manage a diverse book of business. I am responsible for achieving specific customer objectives including monthly revenue and sales targets and the management of an internal expense budget. I am not just accountable for achieving these objectives but required to do so in a manner that is effective, efficient, and inline with corporate policies and beliefs.
“Management is the process of working with people and resources to accomplish organizational goals” (Thomas S. Bateman, Scott A. Snell, 2009, p. 19), but reaching organizational goals does not always equal success. Organizations must achieve goals and objectives in a manner that is efficient, effective, and inline with corporate policies and beliefs. Obtaining goals with inefficiencies in the use of resources such as time, material, people, and money may provide useful in the near term but is detrimental to the organizations future (Thomas S. Bateman, Scott A. Snell, 2009).
Managing an efficient organization means implementing, executing, and consistently reviewing the fundamental management principles.
