Health is “a condition of physical, mental, and social well-being and the absence of disease or other abnormal condition” (Funari n.pag). “The mental health of youth between the ages of 10-19 has sharply declined in the last 25 years”. The chances that 15-year-olds will have behavioral problems such as lying, stealing and being disobedient, have doubled. According to the biggest time trend study conducted in New York, the rate of emotional problems such as anxiety and depression have increased by 70% among adolescents (Youth n.pag). It is said that boys are more likely to exhibit behavioral problems and girls are more likely to suffer emotional problems (Youth n.pag). Authority figures are available to help adolescent in need, but they are being shut out by adolescents who are fearful of discrimination and negativity that goes along with receiving the proper help. In order to ensure the physical and mental health of today’s youth, regular examinations need to be performed by healthcare professionals who will insure adolescents of their privacy.
The United Nations Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organization states that, Youth is understood as a period of transition from the dependence of childhood to adulthood independence and awareness of our interdependence as members of a community(Youth n.pag). One in every six people in the world is adolescent: that is 1.2 billion people age 10 to 19. Illnesses can hinder the ability of adolescents to grow and develop to their full potential (Bunting. n.pag). The United Nations has said that approximately one in five young people will suffer from mental illness, acknowledging these facts are the first step. The next step involves taking appropriate action. However, in order to take this action, most communities need guidance as to the best strategies, tools, program models and interventions to implement in order to effectively address the problems (Alderman n.pag).
