Meaning Of Maturity
Being a mature student does not mean being an old-timer. Maturity is not measured by the number of years a person has lived. Instead, the yard-stick of maturity is marked by the qualities of self-denial, determination, and dependability. First of all, self-denial is an important quality in the mature student. What is the meaning of self-denial? In general, self-denial is the ability to control ourselves from temptation and seducement. A mature student should know what he should do, what he should not do, and overcome the desire which he should not have, in order to achieve success in the future. For example, a mature student should study for his exam, and complete all his homework, before enjoying any other leisure activities. In addition, he or she should insist in strictly following some disciplines and self-made rules in a well planed manner. For instance, a mature student should not drink too much or so often so that he can keep his mind and body fresh and healthy to study in a long semester. Secondly, Determination is another characteristic of the mature student. Undoubtedly, a mature student must have a strong determination to face any frustration and overcome all difficulties. For example, to most mature students, especially those who study far away from their home, working and studying at the same time to cover the tuition fee and living expense, determination gives them energy to wake up straight to the midnight to do a lot of homework and assignments so that they will be submitted on time. For another example, if a mature student wants to work in a big company, he must determine on trying hard to study well in school, and at the same time, to collect experiences in related jobs by working part time or participating in social activities.
