On the “Graduate” episode of Northern Exposure was about 3 main people who had an internal conflict with themselves that was affecting their daily life. This conflict eventually grew to the point where the character had no choice but to deal with the situation. When this conflict reached the climax the character ultimately was able to better themselves from dealing with this internal conflict.
First you had Maggie who was fight an internal demon of trying to have people always like her. This is shown by hiring a couple that she is friends with to mange her newly own movie theater. The couple had no experience in running a business and as we know no justified reason for hiring them beside the fact their friends. This is the first indicator that Maggie wants everyone to like her. After hiring the two this is where the problem starts to arise. The business begins going downhill to the point that people where getting sick from the popcorn. The stress and worries of Maggie business might fail bring her to realize that she had a conflict with herself. She then comes to term with the fact that she wants everyone to like her and that it’s affecting her life. This conflict develop her by admitting this problem and changing her business by firing one of her friend and tell the other that things he is doing aren’t going to work for her. After this climax and self realization, Maggie life is changed for the better and she is finally at peace of mind about her new business.
Next is Steven a young college student who works at a radio stations. His conflict isn’t so clear. We know that he is battle himself internally as seen in his dream where his an army soldier in a middle of battle comes face to face with the enemy that is himself. He is so close to graduating with his degrees there one last test he must complete. His test is to analyze the poem Casey at the Bat by Ernest Lawrence Thayer.
