Poetry Many have asked what poetry is, and to answer that question a poet, Robert Frost replied; “Poetry is a rhythmical composition of words expressing an attitude, designed to surprise and delight, and to arouse an emotional response. Everyone has read or even written poetry in his or her life, especially ones that went to school because that is where we start to learn about poetry. Some people misjudge poetry, but only because they do not understand the point the author was trying to get across. There are many kinds of poetry; the most common one would be the ones that rhyme, then there is haiku, limerick, epic, couplet, etc. Many poems are written to get a point across, whether it is about something going on in the world at the time or just something that the author thinks we should know. Poetry is written to inform the reader with something, it can be about love, hate, education, or even about death. The poets do not just focus on one certain subject; they all have their own thoughts and ideas. Many people write poems about how they are feeling at the moment, and even though they might not be some of the best poets, their work is still important. It is their personal beliefs on something and that should not be ignored. For example, in “O Captain! My Captain!,” Whitman writes, “My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still; My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will;” he is describing this captain that has made it home but he is dying. There are other poems that are about love, they usually come from a man that has been in love, or has been in the past. It can be about starting a new journey or regretting not taking one before. No matter what we write about, our ideas can be put into a poem, and that makes it more meaningful. Anyone that knows how to write can write a poem, all we have to do is think about something going on in our life.
