After the war of 1812, Americans finally started unifying, and supporting the country. Due to this mass amount of newly found nationalism, the post was years were dubbed the, “Era of Good Feelings.” With the only political party being the Republicans, James Monroe ran unopposed in 1820. The post-War of 1812 “Era of Good Feelings” saw an upsurge in economic, diplomatic, and judicial nationalism. Eventually there were a few incidents that turned this “Era of Good Feelings” to not so good feelings.
The post-War of 1812 “Era of Good Feelings” saw an upsurge in Economic Nationalism. Economic nationalism is embodied in Henry Clay’s The American System. The System has something for everyone. It was a valiant effort at compromising. The System was a three part plan, proposed in 1816. The first proposal was a recharter of the bank of the United States, that would help regulate the economy , which would benefit the nation as a whole. The second effort was federally funded improvements (I.e. Roads, Canals, etc). The System would be paid for by taxes. The region that would benefit from this System would be the South and the West, not including the Northeast. A protective tariff was issued in 1816 to protect the northeast from these effects. Monroe is going to be elected for the first time in 1816. He will be faced with financial problems. The Panic of 1819 brought on three years of economic depression. There were several things that contributed to this depression. There was a lot of speculation in the western lands from the Louisiana Purchase, to feed this speculation there is an overextension of credit by state banks.
