Second Language Acquisition and Suggestopedia

As future teachers it is important for us to know how the process of acquiring a second language is. Because of that, we should be familiarized not only with the definitions and the process itself, but also with the different approaches to acquire it. That is why we will present a very interesting approach called Suggestopedia. This method has become very popular and has been recognized by the UNESCO since it gives students an effective learning in less time than other conventional approaches.
To begin with this paper, a definition of SLA (Second Language Acquisition) will be provided in the best way possible, considering that there is not a simple answer. Second language is referred to any language besides the first language or mother tongue. It is important to say that the term ‘second language’ might not be appropriated in all circumstances. There are places such as Africa or Asia in which people are multilingual, which means that they are able to communicate in more than one non-primary language. Saying that these people speak a second language may not be accurate because, for example, in South Africa black learners of English might be perceived as dishonourable. Because of that, it is better to speak about an additional language instead of a second language.
Just as it was important to mention the issue with the second language, it is important to make a difference between the concept of second and foreign language too. A foreign language is a language that does not have a major role in the community but the one that it has in a classroom which is the case of English in our country. A second language is a language that has a role in the community. The fact that one has a role in the community and the other does not will probably have a repercussion in the way they will be taught.
