Seeing Singapore has been such a modern and prosperous country I just have the idea to find out the reason and the developing process of it. In this paper I will discuss mainly the economy of Singapore from 1700 to 1900. We all know that Singapore is a highly urbanized city country situated at the southernmost tip of the Malay Peninsula. It lies to the north of the equator. The entire territory of Singapore consists of the main island of Singapore and fifty-eight small islands that are partially inhabited. Singapore was established in 1965 as an independent country and its territory differs from the old days.
Singapore was separated from Malaysia by the Johor Strait and was separated from Indonesia by the Singapore Strait. Because Singapore lies between the two nations of Malaysia and Indonesia, it will definitely be much influenced by these two. Singapore is also near the Strait of Malacca, which is a very important part of its economy. Such an important location makes Singapore become the key of the Pacific and Indian oceans transportation, and it was always in the scramble of many powerful countries. The economy in Singapore at that time mainly depened on this location too. There were lots of trade happened in the port in Singapore, ships from Asia and Europe went in and out of the ports in there everyday.
In the middle of the 18th century, British people were expanding their business in India and China. At that time the Dutch were also interested in these areas, so the British knew the most important thing for them was finding a harbor, which could give their ships a berth and a place to repair. So they can have advantage over the Dutch. In 1818 Sir Thomas Stamford Bingley Raffles finally founded Singapore. Before Singapore was fond by the British, this place had a lot of pirates, and people’s live were in a great depression. This was an underdeveloped and poor fishing village.
