Slave Life in Estates

Slave Life in Estates

During the slaves time it was much easier to live in
large estates then the small estates. It was much better too, because
if the slaves were to have gotten married then the chances of being
caught would drop, but if you lived in a small estate then the chances
of being caught would rise up. The life of slaves were hard on them
because if they were to fall in love with one another and to have
married. then that can cause a huge problem for them. The slaves
wouldn't have enough tobacco to pay up the amount of 500 pounds of
tobacco, and if the master has to pay then the slaves will have to
work for them for another two years. If the married slave workers
would make a child then the tobacco rate will in crease to 2,000
pounds. If you really think about if they only just got married they
spend two more years so if it's 2,000 pounds I'm guessing that its
going to be around 8 more years.
In the household of the small estates the slaves would
just have to hope and try very hard not to be caught if they were
married or had a kid. If the slaves had a kid it would really have
a huge effect if they were found and was punished. During this time
period it was hard for slaves and it was hard making sure that they
didn't get caught being together. In the packet where it shows the
table of estates on page 9 it shows a table of the 7 small Virginia
estates on the very bottom of the page. If you were to look at the row
of single-parent there is a lot of them. My prediction is that there
were a lot of single-parents because there was nowhere to hide if you
did get married or have a kid there was a high possibility that you
would get caught. It was harder on the slaves who lived in the small
estates.
The lives of slaves who lived in the big estates had a
more relaxing time even if they had to more work. Slaves who lived
there had an easier time hiding the fact that the slaves were married,
the bigger the better I'd say. In...
