Sleep for humans is the best thing that we can do for our body. Wile we sleep we give our bodies time to recover and recharge from the all the activities and stress we went through that day. When we sleep our bodies restore our immune system to make sure our body is 100% ready to fight off infection and viruses. As we sleep, we go through different sleep stages. NREM sleep stands for non rapid eye movement sleep. During this stage we are in a very light sleep. REM stands for rapid eye movement and accounts for 20%-25% of total sleep in most adult humans. During the REM stage of our sleep is when the most memorable dreams occur. Adults and elderly people should get 7-8 hours asleep and it changes the younger you are.
In our sleep survey my hypothesis was that I would think that athletes would get more sleep than non-athletes and that athletes would get more sleep before their competition. The research showed that athletes did sleep a little bit longer before their completion. When we broke it down to seasons 78% of fall athletes slept 2.25 hours longer, 30% of winter athletes slept for 1.3 hours longer, 41% of spring athletes slept 1.8 hours longer. And finally 82% of multi-sport athletes slept 2.16 hours longer before their completion. Athletes who sleep longer before their competition would be well rested and more alert, that in turn would boost your performance in your sport. If sleeping more before a competition helps boost your performance then that should mean that sleeping more after the competition will enhance your recovery time. The research that we’ve done showed that 58% of fall athletes slept 1.81 hours longer after competition, 55% of winter athletes got .65 hours of more sleep, 50% of spring athletes got 1.7 more hours, and finally 68% of multi-sport athletes got 2.4 more hours of sleep after competition. More sleep after a competition or strenuous exercise is essential because it gives your body more time to recover and repair, which will...
