The Frank family all began in the German city of Frankfurt-am-Main in the early 17th century. Otto Frank, her father, came from a prosperous family, and at age twenty moved to America and worked at Macy’s, the famous department store. When his father died he moved back to Germany and worked at an engineering factory in Düsseldorf. When World War l broke out, he and his two brothers served in the army. He had risen to the rank of a lieutenant. Soon after the war he went into the banking industry like his previous father. In 1925, he married Edith Hollander, who came from Aachen in northern Germany. They decided to settle in Frankfort. In 1926, they had their first daughter, Margot Bettie Frank. And in 1929, had Annelies Marie, or well known as, Anne Frank. They immigrated to Holland in 1933, where her father was appointed Managing Director of Travis N.V. he did this because Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party came into power in Germany. Hitler blamed the Jews for Germany’s problems. Frankfort had a Jewish population of 30,000, so he thought Holland would be much safer for his family. In 1934, she went to school at the Montessori Kindergarten. In 1938, her grandmother came to stay with them because she was becoming very sick at the age of 73. Once the year 1940 hit, the normal life she knew began to disappear, thanks to the man, Adolf Hitler.
Germany was defeated in World War I due to their people starving the government gave up and surrendered. Many of the soldiers were upset because they believed they were betrayed, and among those soldiers was a man named Adolf Hitler. He believed that people could be divided into different races and believed that the most superior people were the Aryans, who should rule the world and have all other races as their slaves. In the 1920s, Adolf Hitler’s National Socialist German Workers Party, Nazis for short, was a small political splinter group. Hitler and his party were anti-Semitic, meaning they hated Jews.
