Friendship

I think friendship in generally, not only in prison, is one of the most important things in life. We often forget how important it really is to have a true friend. Because true friends can really improve our lives. A friend is someone you can relate to, someone who can motivate you or inspire you. In times of grief or sadness a friend can be your only hope. Real friendship is very essential to everyone in our daily lives. It’s not only children that needs a true friend, it’s also adults. It’s not only the weak that needs a true friend, it’s also the big tough guy. Nothing really matters in life if you don’t have anyone to share it with. When all of your dreams come true, you need a friend beside you.

Andy:
When Andy came to Shawshank he didn’t say much. The first weeks he was almost completely quiet and kept to himself. But when he did, it was Ellis “Red” Redding he spoke with first. That gave Andy not only one new friend, but Red introduced him to his close friends in prison. Who eventually became his friends also. Andy helped alot of people when he was in jail. Not only his closes friends, but also his inmates and enemies.
For example, he wrote a letter and asked the state to build a new library for them. It went very good, because at last Shawshank had the biggest prison library. But that wasn’t the only thing Andy did for his inmate and their education. He helped several inmates to get their grades up and helped them take the GED examinations.
One of the persons he helped the most was Tommy. Andy taught him to read, write and count. It was Andy who gave Tommy the opportunity to graduate.

There were two great things Andy did for this friends and other inmates in prison that I think meant alot for them. Even if it only was for a second, he gave them the feeling that they weren’t in prison. All locked up. He got beer for his friends when they worked at the roof.
