The Second American Party System
In a country that is so great, with so much history and at the same time with so many differences, failed at the First American Party System. So, a Second Party System was created, this system was created by the voters, protestors, media and those devoted to their party. The two major parties that were involved were the Democrats and the Whig Party that was made up of the National Republicans. So, what exactly were the parties trying to accomplish, with this new system? In order to understand this question, first, one needs to know who the two parties were. The one thing they both agreed on, was to disagree. “This division in the Republican Party would soon produce the Second Party System, in which national-minded Whigs and state-focused Democrats would confront each other.”
The Second American Party System is a term that is used to define the political system from 1828 – 1854. In the election of 1828 the democrats took office and none other than Andrew “Old Hickory” Jackson won the election. Once Jackson secured the presidency he set out to tear down the American System that had been put into place by John Quincy Adams and Henry Clay. The Democrats would inherit Thomas Jefferson’s beliefs in the rights of yeoman farmers, this gained most of their support from the south and west. The Democrats distrust in the governments interference of social, economic and religious affairs that were second to none. The Jacksonian democracy was geared towards the common man. They were for state rights and the removal of the protected tariff and the National Bank. In order to remain neutral, the government would have to desist from all economic activity.
