Abortion has always been a controversial and the most debated topic over the past few decades. Abortion came into existence since the beginning of our civilization. But even in the ancient times, no common ground could be established on the abortion topic. Later, in most recent years, the society has become more divided on the abortion subject than ever before. Few might say that the human life starts upon conception; therefore committing an abortion can be counted as a purposed murder of a human being. Another group of people say that in order to call the abortion an act of murder, the human being should develop the following skills first: reasoning, independent living from any type of host. This group of people has a strong belief that life starts when the human is born, rather than the actual start, so therefore abortion cannot be considered as a murder. There is also a group of people out in the world that has no certain opinion about the abortion and decides to take a neutral side in this heated debate. They believe that abortion can be considered as a legal act in certain cases, but on the other hand it still can be viewed as a murder. This paper will discuss and explain each one of the points stated above, and will also present a point of agreement, know as a “common ground.”
Based on a religious view, a lot of people would argue that life of the fetus starts at the moment of conception. However, the scientific point of view says that fetus feels absolutely nothing until the ninth week in pregnancy and that “more than half of all the abortions occur before that period of time” (Monahan). Some abortions do occur after the nine-week period, and so not allowing that to take place can be the first step in finding a common ground between the opposing sides.
