Allyson Lacey September 20, 2008 Fall 2008 E.T. Paull America Forever! March Sheet music is a book, pamphlet or single sheet handwritten or in printed form of musical notations. The musical notation comes in two different forms; either copyrighted or printed or it is in its original hand-written form, which is most often found in older pieces of sheet music, prior to the printing press (Binkley). Reading sheet music and understanding the sketches of musical information within sheet music requires a special skill and literacy. Professional musicians and deliberate amateurs with experience in basic music theory are capable of following sheet sketches (Wikipedia). This essay has been deliberated on the sheet music of one piece in particular, ‘America Forever March’ composed by E.T. Paull in 1898, and more specifically, an insight into the significance of patriotic music within the United States. ‘America Forever! March’ is an excellent example of sheet music structured as a patriotic song, with lyrics and graphics portraying an anti-Civil War message and an effort at achieving grand unity in rebuilding America. Contemporary sheet music has different formats. The score is a vital element of sheet music where instrumental and vocal fractions are grouped together. In a score, musical notations for each vocal and instrumental module are placed in vertical alignment. Compositions of instruments and voices are lined up in a fixed order in conductor's score. It is intended to be large enough for the conductor easily look at and read, while he is directing rehearsals and performances. Another type of score is referred to as a miniature score, which is enclosed with few introductory remarks for practical use of a large collection as well as for a solo performer.
