Ambrose Gorringe Character Study
Portrayal of character on first impression
Ambrose first time described in appearance: He “was of middle height with smooth black hair and delicate hands and feet. He gave an impression of spry plumpness , not because he carried excess fat but because of the feminine softness and roundness of his arms and face...” the omniscient narrators continues to descriptively illustrate in our minds a portrait of Ambrose. [pg. 74]
Ambrose in appearance was first introduced into the novel wearing appropriate attire for the occasion however Cordelia believed that it seemed incongruous and that she expected much more from a man that seemed to have a very formidable personality at first impression.
Initially he gave off a positive atmosphere in his castle as it was well-maintained and had many housemaids and many of Ambrose’s treasures displayed throughout the household.
Ambrose’s Chamber of Horrors portrayed a different side to his personality as he explains in strong interest the stories and histories behind each item.
In first section of novel, Ambrose is shown in control and completely oblivious to murder-to-be of Clarissa. His main concern is shown to be the state of the castle and his involvement in everything as a duty of being the owner of the island. His relationship in relation to Clarissa is in a way established as they are shown to have differences in the Chamber of Horrors. [pg. 85]
Ambrose gives the gift of a jewellery case to Clarissa which is explained to be very expensive and rare object belonging to him and this portrays him in a better way showing him as selflessness and generous in giving it to Clarissa despite the nasty things that have been discussed about her.
