Article #2 10/9/08 In bloom: growing algae for biofuel Paul Henley BBC NEWS 10/9/08 There are many different alternatives to gasoline that are now trying to be established as a new source of fuel for our vehicles and other transportation. Algae, is a type of plant that grows in aquariums on the glass or even in ponds and lakes. Algae containsvegetable oil and can be processed into engine fuel. Many major airlines are trying to be the first airline to have a passenger plane flying powered by green energy alternatives. Algae will be very good for the airlines because they will be charged through their CO2 emissions and algae is environmentally friendly and will reduce the cost paid for poor emissions. Some scientist such as Douglas Parr, chief scientific advisor for Greenpeace UK believes that “There are many questions about it,” such as “How much land will it use? How efficient will it be? And will it ever be commercially demonstrated?” Algae seems like it could be a very good biofuel that can be used to help fuel the world, the scientist in Holland will continue to research and develop this idea and hopefully one day we will be running our vehicles based on biofuels like this. Vocabulary: Constituent; serving to compose or make up a thing; component the airlines because they will be charged through their CO2 emissions and algae is environmentally friendly and will reduce the cost paid for poor emissions.
