I. SYNOPSIS
In the 1922 novel, The Beautiful and Damned by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is the story that deals with Anthony Patch’s life. Anthony and Gloria Patch who become the bright lights of the 1920s New York smart set and lead life of luxury and indulgence. But Jazz age comes at a price. The story tells about the progression of his intense attraction for Gloria Gilbert, the beautiful and dazzling maiden. It describes their connections through the courtship and marriage, the endless parties and events, the life of luxury, and to the couple’s decadent lifestyle which finally begins to fall apart.
In the start of the novel, Anthony Patch, a handsome, intelligent and well-educated, who only wants to live a life in luxury and expecting to inherit all his grandfather’s riches when he die. He also claims as a writer, yet he is not working as it. Instead, he spent his time in unwinding. His plan is to inherit his grandfather’s money and live a luxurious easy life. And most of his time is used in mingling with other wealthy people and becoming friends with them.
Until, he met Gloria Gilbert whom he courted and eventually become his wife. She is beautiful, gorgeous and vain and because of her looks, every one adores her and got special treatments from others.
Anthony’s inheritance uncertain and their decadent lifestyle create many issues that will affect their marriage. However, they do remain together but they are not happy, as their life suddenly begins to fall.
In the end, Anthony’s grandfather dies and discovers that he may not get his inheritance from him. These awaken him to reality, Anthony unable to hold down a job, and the couple obsession to alcohol and depression as their finances and marriage collapse. He might have been exposed to misery, his craving romance had been punished, his friends had deserted him – even Gloria had turned against him. He had been alone facing it and when he recovered from that misery, he earned respect from his friend who showed...
