ABSTRACT

Artificial selection is similar to natural selection except that, whereas in natural selection the characteristics selected are those that are best suited to the environmental conditions, while in artificial selection humans determine which characteristics should be selected. Selective breeding, humans determine which phenotypes, and therefore genotypes are desirable in species. They then increase the allies for these traits through breeding programmes. Often the species produced would be unable to survive in the wild.

Cattle breeding involve selection of stock, insemination (both natural and artificial) as well as embryo transfer for producing genetically improved offsprings. Breeding, especially the artificially form of breeding being practiced these days has realized a long cherished dream of the scientists and it has now become possible to get the genetically superior animals to produce more offsprings than it would be possible through natural mating. More offsprings and better characterized than the parents are produced on a shorter amount of time. Selective breeding has been very successful and still is through the Embryo Transfer Technique and Hybrid and composite. Composite breeding is where two hybrids of same breed – combination bred back to each other for generations. And Hybrid is when first generation crosses between animals that belong to different breeds. Evolution lives on and breeding changes time after time.
