The elementary and middle school in which my teacher(s)/partner(s) are housed are located in a city with a population of approximately 130,000 and is one of the leading cities in this area to continue to increase its population. This information was taken from the City Chamber of Commerce. The school district has a total of 25,300 students, 33 campuses, 3,265 employees, and 1,634 teachers. The district’s demographics are 92. 5% Hispanic, 5% White, 1.7 % Asian, .4% African American, .03% two or more races, and .02% African American. The district serves 67% Economically Disadvantage Students, 27.1%, Limited English Proficient (LEP) students, and 63.6 % At Risk Students. This information was taken from the 2011-2012 Academic Excellence Indicator System (AEIS) Report that was available on the district website.
The Elementary Campus
The elementary campus is located in mid-town, which is in the heart of the city. The campus is one of the oldest campuses where many of the students are brought to school by bus or with the parent’s by car or walked to school. In years past, some students would ride their bikes, but I have not seen this in recent years. This campus is home to a famous Astronaut, that when in town visiting family, will come and visit.
The principal, at the elementary campus where Frida and Mary Frances teach, was supplanted two years ago coming from a neighboring district. She has made several changes to the elementary that has been very beneficial to the district. This campus is one of the original campuses that was instrumental in leading our district in the new initiative “Transforming Learning in the Classroom, Campus, and Community, (TLC3). This initiative’s plan is to place an electronic device into the hands of every student. Students are already using either the I-Pad or I-Pod Touch as a daily learning tool.
