Abstract
Religious people can define prayer as a solemn request for help, communicating with God in any form or expression of thanks to the God or any objects of worship. The prayers may be conducted as an individual or a group. Many religion believe that there is One Supreme Being called God and they acknowledge Him.
Athletics is a physical sport for competing in tracks or field. An athlete is the person who participates in the sport.
The question is 'Should athletes be allowed to pray before a sporting event?' In this paper we are gong to see whether they should be allowed or not. Some may argue that prayers are selfish especially when participants get ready to start a match, they touch their chest to pray to God to help their them win. There are many reasons to pray as we shall see in this paper. Others may argue that sports is like life and we really need to acknowledge God in order to lay a good game and win.









Many officials do not offer prayer before sporting events. They may not also invite a religious leader or athletes to offer prayers before the sporting event. Majority of the governments in the world do not offer a clause which provides for prayer at any event and most of them are neutral when it comes to the subject of the religion. For this reason the officials conducting any sporting event have no right to encourage or discourage prayers.
The general rule is that organized prayer in many public events whether indoor or out door in many countries may be unconstitutional. Also the only types of prayers that are permissible are those that are held at the respective places for instance in the church, at the mosque or any other house of prayer. Furthermore in many states those who are concerned with prayers should do it voluntarily that it should not be coercive and does not disrupt or disturb other people.
