In this passage, E.M. Forester claims that when having causes dealing with either portraying a country because having a stable relationship is much more valuable then someone you just met. He supports his claim by implying one of the most famous play writes by Dante. He would place Brutus and Cassius in the “ lowest circle of hell” because they had decided to betray their friend Julius Caesar rather than their country Rome. He understands that a good stable relationship with a friend is better than siding with a country who you barely know.
Forester’s claim is correct because you can’t just side with the country because everyone is. A friend is more important because it’s the person who has a person’s back no matter what even if they had to decide which to betray. And if that person betrays a friend then they will cause more trouble and fusion in their further life. It kind of resembles when Martin Luther King gave has speech. He needed the colored people to protest about freedom. And they have to decide which to betray the country or Martin Luther King. Because if they betray the country, they are going to be badly beaten for not obeying the law of the country.
It is true that sometimes a friend can be wrong at the things they are doing and sometimes the only thing to do is side with the country.
While there is some truth to this argument, it is inadequate because people can always try to change their friends minds or if their friend knows that it is the right thing to do, then change the country’s mind. Maybe there was some kind of misunderstanding. Still, there is no reason why mankind should betray a friend. If they did, then they shouldn’t have been their friend in the first place.
It is more often the case that the friend should be right. It is said that great minds think alike, a friend and a friend.
