Breakfast Club

The breakfast club is an all-time classic movie. I decided to focus on Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. The Hierarchy of needs theory is one of the best theories every created. Maslow wanted to know what motivates people. His beliefs were that individuals have a set of motivation systems that were not related to rewards or unconscious desires. He thought that people were motivated not to do things for others, but to achieve certain needs. He believed that there were always needs to be achieved. Once one need was achieved people would move on to the next one and so on.
In the movie The Breakfast Club, there are five different characters. They all show Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs theory. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs breaks down into a pyramid, or a five stage model. Each stage is different, and broken down into 5 basic needs. The need that is displayed at the bottom is the Physiological need which includes basic needs that include; air, food, water, sex, and sleep. The next one up on the chart is the Safety need; which includes security of environment, employment, resources, health and property. The third one above the safety need is the Belongingness need; which includes love, friendship, intimacy and family. The second most important need is the Esteem need; which includes confidence, self-esteem, achievement and respect. And last but not least the most important need in Maslow’s hierarchy need theory is the Self-actualization need; which includes morality, creativity and problem solving.
In the movie, Brian is stereotyped as the “nerd.” The physiological need is displayed through Brian by him having a packed lunch. Brian knew that before he went to detention on that Saturday morning, he would get hungry later. So by him having his packed lunch, which was a balanced nutritious meal, it showed the psychological need of him needed food.
