In 1942 the British commander surrendered resulting in fifty thousand allied soldiers becoming prisoners of war to the Japanese, with half of them being Australian. The brutality of the Japanese towards the Australian Prisoners of War was extreme.”Changi” to a certain extent represents this. The film depicts the majority of Japanese to have no morals as well as being cruel and evil toward the Japanese. They have no boundaries and maliciously beat the P.O.W on random occasions. A strong example of the extreme punishment that the Japanese demonstrates was when they locked “Curly” in the small hole in the middle of the ground for two months as a consequence of stealing a small amount of jam. He was given mushed food once a day, and had dangerous creatures such as snakes and dead dogs placed in his prison. Aswell as in a early episode the Japanese gather many woman, children and anyone the deem useless, they then linde them up and shot them. Though the conditions at the P.O.W camp were extremely harsh and many of the events have been proven factual, some of the brutality has been exaggerated for entertainment purposes of the film. The film potrays the Japanese reguraly executing prisoners though it has been proven that this was not the case, though there were a few. Though Some of the brutality has been reduced as it is to horrific and violent to show on the mini-series. Such as the long walk to Burma to build the railway line, where if you did not keep up you were beaten and left to die in the jungle, this happened to hundreds of people.
