Billboards, signs, radios, newspapers, television, and internet are main instruments that we as society see or make use of every day, and advertisers use as channels to advertise to society. In today's society, we must consider - Is there any advantage or disadvantage of advertising? In many cases advertisements are annoying hindrance in our daily lives, but without advertising our society would move at a snail’s pace to grow. In today’s society there are many gender stereotypes and sexual innuendos that remain a prevalent part of the advertising tactics of the media.
To begin with, the stereotyping we see in our society and in the media are a result of what is expected and what sells. The reason media stereotypes is that picture are a short cut to bring forth the required action. Messages that stereotype individuals by their concentration, frequencies and omissions become a part of our long-lasting memory, affirms Jenny Ellen. Moreover, Ellen states that advertisements also stereotypes ethnicity, and she employs a mixture of ethnic illustrations. Ellen stereotypes ethnicity in advertisements as: African Americans play sport and run really fast, Latinos joins gangs, Native Americans drink a lot, brown skin people are extremely intelligent but easily fooled, homeless people are drug addicts, rich people make their way through money. James Richardson in his argumentative editorial, “Gender Stereotype Used in Advertising” employs the prejudices that exist between the sexes. Richardson however states, a lot of gender still is seen in advertising today, with some of it being useful and some of it being harmful. He demonstrates some common female stereotypes in advertising. Reflect on the fact that women are also portrayed through ads as “nurturing, caring, softer, maternal figures”.
