Photosynthesis Formal Lab Report Part 1 Colours of Light that Influence the Rate of Photosynthesis By: Farial Faquiry Purpose Theory Materials Test tube Test tube rack Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) Elodea Scissors Water Different colour light bulbs (yellow, blue, red, green, white) Stop watch Procedure Place a test tube in a test tube rack on the lab bench. Fill the test tube with water to about 2 cm from the top. Add a pinch of sodium bicarbonate to the test tube. Select a piece of elodea that is approximately 8-10cm long Place the plant in the test tube upside down so that the cut stem is towards the surface of the water. Carefully cut off the tip (2mm) of the stem under the water. Be careful not to cut the plant on a node (the part where the branches attach to the main stem). Using your fingers, carefully crush the end of the stem under the water Observe the cut end very carefully. Bubbles should be emerging from the cut end. Place a light bulb 15 cm away from the test tube, measure the distance with a ruler. Place one light bulb at a time. Turn on the bulb and start the time and start counting for 5 minutes the number of bubbles being given off from the stem. Record your observation Turn of the bulb with oven mittens, careful the light bulbs get very hot. Switch the light bulb to a different colour and repeat step 6-8 for each light bulb. 10.Using a timer watch with a second hand, count the number of bubbles given off for a period of 5 minutes. Record your results in your observation table. Determine the rate/minute.
