Abstract: America and China, as two typical countries representing western and eastern culture, have many distinctive differences in people’s views regarding marriage, which shape the different women’s role in marriage. This paper aims to present these differences and demonstrate how they come into being.

1. Introduction
With the social development of China and America from many aspects, these two countries both witnessed great changes of women’s role in marriage. Contemporary females seem to hold more initiatives in marriage. Also, their options have increased several times compared with that of the old times. With the modern notion of marriage growing mature, females nowadays tend to be more cautious and rational when facing a marriage. In addition, contemporary females hold much more initiatives in marriage compared with that of the old times. These changes lead to a series of modern marriage phenomena, such as the growing divorce rate, the rise of cohabitation before marriage, the legalization of lesbian marriage and the increasing number of single mothers. These phenomena have emerged both in America and China during the recent decades. By focusing on these specific phenomena, this essay is going to make comparisons between America and China on the issue of what the female’s role is like in modern society. As the two countries have varied history, religion, economy and traditional marriage value system, there are certain differences existing. But as these gaps are narrowing day by day with the culture clashes and coexistence, some similarities can be found, too.
