Most Americans believe that the more citizens that have the right to conceal carry a weapon the safer the country will be, but in fact it will not be safer. The more people who conceal carry will just become more of a nuisance then someone who cannot legally carry a weapon. The endless debate and rhetoric over gun rights versus public safety seems to never end, but the hard facts in a new report on gunshot fatalities showing that at least 722 nonself-defense deaths since 2007 were attributable to individuals with legal permits to carry concealed weapons. Now, this is highly alarming because state governments want to give out more permits that should not be given out.
The Violence Policy Center, a gun safety group, found that in research involving 722 deaths in 544 concealed-carry shootings in 36 states and the District of Columbia, only 16 cases were eventually ruled lawful self-defense. In talks of public safety, statistics like these show that even conceal carry is not a deterrent in crimes and the alarming part of the statistic is that the research was not done in all the states but only in 36 of them. These type of statistics show that people are living out some power strung fantasy and imitating the works of God. In essence people are putting others’ lives and future in the very palms of their hands.
There were 28 mass shootings, in which 136 people were killed, even though concealed carry has also been sold in congress as a defense against massacres. In studying the 544 shootings, the center found 177 cases where people with gun licenses were in due course convicted of crimes, including homicides, and 218 cases where the conceal carry holder used the gun to commit suicide. There were 44 total lives taken by licensed individuals who first murdered others, then committed suicide.
