Lying Won’t Get You Far

Telling a lie is like temporarily escaping reality, but when reality hits, life becomes more complicated than it would’ve been if the truth would’ve been told. A few reasons people tell lies are to get away with something, to hide things, to embellish their lives and to cover the truth. When a person becomes so absorbed in lies that they’re constantly lying, they tend to forget their true self. In “Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen” a teenage girl, Lola Cep, moves to a new state. She views this as an opportunity to ‘recreate herself’ by lying, which almost breaks up her most valuable friendship. Both the book and the film do a great job of illustrating how teens struggle to find their place and individuality in high school, and how some view lying as an easy way to fit in. The characters represent people from different cliques. The plot demonstrates how not lying and being true to yourself will get you far. The scene where Lola and her friend, Ella, try to sneak into a concert reiterates that Lola’s lies get her nowhere. The overall film represents the main ideas and points of the book very well.
The characters in “Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen” clearly represent people from different social groups. The main character is Lola Cep (really Mary Cep) is a unique girl. In Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, by Sheldon, she says, “In my family, I’m like a flamingo in a flock of pigeons…” She’s different from everyone around her, she knows it and she likes it. She can’t be put into any group or be described as a typical stereotype. In the novel she also says, “Expecting them to understand would be like expecting a cat to understand Hamlet.” Lola’s referring to her family, her schoolmates, and anyone else who judges her regularly. She believes she is misunderstood so she lies to make her life more exciting. Another character is described as, “Carla Santini…was the center of all meaningful homeroom conversation among the girls....
