Every time smokers light up a cigarette twenty minutes of her life is gone. Male smokers average 13.2 percent who smoke their lives away, and women average 14.5 percent. Many of these smokers do not know the side effects of smoking. Smoking causes financial, physical, and psychological complications. Smoking causes many physical complications. One is the development of emphysema, a critical lung disease, which causes shortness of breath. Wheezing is another part of having emphysema. It can cause smokers to age prematurely by wrinkling of the face, sinking of the eyes, and yellowing of the skin and teeth. Smoking causes thousands of deaths per year. Depending on a smoker’s genetics, weight gain or weight loss may occur. This weight gain or weight loss may lead to more health problems. In addition, smoking can result in lung cancer which shortens one’s life. Smoking is linked to 175,000 to 200,000 of all heart and blood vessel disease. Finally, smoking has many negative physical effects. Smoking can cause a financial burden for the average smoker. A smoker creates financial problems when he or she chooses to buy cigarettes instead of necessities. Smokers do not keep track of how many packs of cigarettes they buy’ Therefore, they do not realize how much money they spend a year. According to, Tobaccocontrol.com, the average smoker spends $118 a month on cigarettes. The total spent is $1416 a year or more. It also cost Americans $50 billion dollars in medical care each year. Non-smokers don’t have a chance of being hospitalized due to smoking-related illnesses, which saves them more money. Smoking can also cause the average person to go bankrupt.
