You get those questions in life and one always finds someone that does not agree to what one believes. There are several different topics that can really spark a conversation such as should there be the death penalty? So many people believe that there should be the death penalty and others who are so against it. So this question bares an answer, is the death penalty the right form of punishment or is the death penalty as cruel as punishment can get?
This topic is so much in debate because of all the effects that it has on the person that is on death row and even the victim’s family and friends. If one may not know, Capital Punishment is the punishment of death that is handed down by the government do to the crime that was committed by the person. The United States did not always have the death penalty, but when the Great Depression happened in the 1930’s there were a lot more murders. People were affected by what was happening and this leads them to murder. It then later decreased, because what people had thought about capital punishment. From 1967 to 1976, there was not one person that had been executed in the United States (White, n.d.). This was most in part to the Supreme Court ruling that capital punishment was inhumane and could no longer be done in any state. In1976, that ruling was over turned by another Supreme Court. There have been almost 1100 executions that have occurred since 1976 (White, n.d.).
Capital Punishment is done in more than just the United States. In Europe and Latin American, they have gotten rid of capital punishment. There are countries like these that just do not believe in the government taking another life. Other countries like Iraq, China, or Iran do use capital punishment as a way of punishment. As far as the United States, still all states do not have that as a form of punishment; there are more states that have the death penalty then those that do not have it.
