Overview of the Old Testament
PRIMEVAL PERIOD
• This part of the Old Testament history is apparent in Genesis and Job. It covers Creation, all the way to the birth of Abraham.
PATRIARICHAL PERIOD-2166 BC to 1446 BC
• The Patriarichal period of the Old Testament includes a very crucial asset of the Christian faith, the Covenant. In this period, God makes a promise to Abraham that will affect the rest of humanity to a great extent. Genesis 12-50 identifies the Patriarical period.
EXODUS-1446-1406 BC
• Exodus defines the laws created by God for His people. Included in Exodus are the books Exodus, Numbers, Leviticus, and Deuteronomy. This portion of the Old Testament is significant because it is the first time that a specific moral standard was identified. It gave the people a certain code to live by. During this time, we also see Moses direct the people to the promised land, the land of Canaan.
CONQUEST OF CANAAN-1406-1390 BC
• The Conquest of Canaan can be found in the book of Joshua. During this era, Joshua was responsible for directing the nation of Israel into their promised land. This section of the Bible describes the Israelites fight for their land.
TIME OF JUDGES-1367-1050 BC
• During this time, there was no designated leadership. The time of Judges is apparent in Judges, Ruth, and 1st Samuel 1-7.

UNITED KINGDOM-1050-931 BC
• The books of the Bible follow the establishment of the monarchy, then the time of establishment with King David, and then finally the decline of the kingdom with King Solomon. 1st and 2nd Samuel, 1st Kings, and 1st and 2nd Chronicles portray the monarchy’s establishment. Psalms tells of the establishment during King David’s rule. Finally, Ecclesiastes, Proverbs, and Song of Solomon display the United Kingdom’s decline.
