Fundamental ways in which NCAA’s ethics program failed.
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is an organization that is actively involved in safeguarding the wellbeing of student-athletes who are its members. It is also involved in empowerment of these athletes as they pursue excellence in both their academic and sportsmanship lives. The association voluntary receives membership from across three divisions with school ranking being the selection tool. NCAA acts as a strategic positioning platform where great and exemplary students use as a Launchpad to professional contracts in their athletic fields of specialization as well as progressive careers in the society.(Smith and Willingham, 2015). NCAA also gives an opportunity for the less fortunate students to acquire scholarships in prestigious learning institutions while still excising their talents. The association has an established Ethics and Compliance program that guides the conduct of its members’ participation. It provides strict guidelines on the dos and don’ts while involved in the Association’s activities. However, there has been repeat occurrences where some officials, member institutions and the student-athletes have colluded to defy these set code of conduct resulting to grave misconduct. This is obvious due to the scandals that occurred in Ohio and Penn states and involved the University of Arkansas.
First, NCAA Ethic and Compliance program failed to prevent scandals involving the above states and university by allowing sexual abuse or sexual assaults to occur to students-athletes which is a serious offence and a show of lack of care. Secondly, the officials failed to act within their responsibilities by their direct involvement in criminal misbehavior such as drunk driving, illegal gambling, match fixing, allowing drug and substance use and sexual advances to their athletes that out rightly violates...
