The vast majority of the population is aware of the physical benefits of exercise. However, the mental gains facilitated by physical activity are comparatively unknown. Recent investigations have revealed that frequent workout sessions significantly improve the brain. Two such studies are discussed in “How Exercise Could Lead to a Better Brain” and “How Exercise Fuels the Brain.” The information presented within these two articles possesses similarities and differences, strongly captures my interest, and pertains to America’s obesity epidemic.
The studies discussed within the articles share a range of similarities. “How Exercise Could Lead to a Better Brain” states that physical activity bolsters the brain by decreasing the rate at which it naturally decays. This slow in deterioration is a result of exercise’s ability to facilitate the creation and connection of new neurons. As a result of these new connections, the brain’s overall strength is significantly improved. Similarly, “How Exercise Fuels the Brain” highlights physical training’s capacity to enhance the mind. The gains it discusses are a result of how working out affects the brain’s energy stores. It states that the process of replenishing glycogen after strenuous activity significantly increases the vital organ’s ability to store the sugar. Hence, the amount of stored energy available to the brain is increased. The articles present evidence pertaining to the brain being enhanced through exercise. Additionally, the studies discussed in the two columns both utilize mice and find that physically active rodents consistently experience more brain growth than those who are lethargic. Cutting edge research is discussed by each column, and this information has the potential to change how the link between the brain and exercise is perceived.
