Gay Rights: The long fight to rights.
Many people in the United States find it necessary to have both sexes in the upbringing of a child to give a sense of balance, while others believe that gay couples have a more stable relationship which in return gives a child a feeling of security. However it is not always looked at to be the overall picture of an “Ideal Family” where there is a mother and a father. There are some states that have passed laws against gay adoption but later have found it to be unconstitutional. For example, the state of Florida clearly stated that homosexuals were not eligible to adopt and had prohibited gay adoptions since 1977, and that law was upheld by the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in 2004. The well known actress, comedian and openly lesbian Rosie O'Donnell, is also a foster parent in Florida who helped lead a failed effort in 2004 to overturn that state's ban on gay adoptions, however, in the last two years Florida has changed its law allowing gay and lesbian couples the right to adopt. O‘Donnell said in an interview”gays and lesbians are often willing to take children that straight couples won't. She said she once cared for a girl who had been in 30 foster homes and who was later adopted by a friend.”(?). Some may ask themselves if they are having such a hard time placing children why is there a problem placing them with same sex couples? The answer to that question is one that many homosexual couples would like answered. There is no research stating that adoption by a same sex couple has any negative effects on a child. Although many find it appalling, others feel it is unconstitutional to be denied the right to adopt simply because of one’s choice of sexual preference.
Not only is same sex adoption an issue that some people in America have a hard time overcoming, but the whole issue of gay rights in its self is often over looked or demeaned. It has been a long and agonizing fight to get to where we are regarding the...
