Question 1 Source 1; Inclusive Masculinity in a Fraternal Setting. (Anderson, 2008)
This article is about how hegemonic masculinity is affected in a fraternity setting and involves a two-year study on a large chapter of a national fraternity that demonstrates an inclusive form of masculinity. In a traditional fraternity setting, hegemonic masculinity is demonstrated through the selectively recruiting members based on gender, race and stereotypical views of heterosexual men and male dominance. In the form of inclusive masculinity, the traits that are demonstrated are different in the fact that they bolster social equality for gay men, respect for women, and racial parity.

In the study of the national fraternity they demonstrate what they call being a “new age man” which encourages a softer form of masculinity among its members. As part of the new age man program they are seeking diversity in its members that will reflect university’s student population. These members must promote inclusive attitudes that include both sexual and racial diversity, and the treatment of women with dignity and respect. One might thing that with this type of diversity in a fraternal setting, it would generally indicate a lower class or social status. This is not the case of this national fraternity in which they maintain a high social prestige in the Greek system.
